Dark Souls GFWL to Stream Data Migration Now Available

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition players can now transfer their Dark Souls save data and achievements from Games For Windows Live to Steamworks.

The update is available between now and February 16, 2015. On February 16, the Steamworks version becomes the default, meaning anyone who has failed to transfer their data by then may risk losing it completely. Find full instructions on the data migration on the Dark Souls Steam discussions page.

The migration to Steamworks was a long time coming, especially after a few month-long delays. With the new Steamworks functionality, you'll no longer need to login to a second platform, Games For Windows Live, to play Dark Souls on PC.

Steam also reflects all previous achievements earned from the migrated save data, except – it seems – the original date you unlocked them, which is replaced instead by the date you activated the update. We're not sure whether this will change to reflect the original date the achievements were unlocked, and have reached out to Bandai Namco Games for comment.

A few players in the Dark Souls community on Steam and Reddit have reported game crashes following the update, as well as issues specific to the popular DSFix mod. Players are advising each other to either disable FPS unlock in the fix's configuration file, or remove the mod altogether. Dark Souls plays at a default 30 FPS without DSFix.

Other mods, such as DSMFix, which tweaks the default keyboard and mouse controls, have posed similar issues for players trying to transfer their data.

IGN has reached out to Bandai Namco for comment on some of the issues players seem to be experiencing. We will update with any further information.
