DC Will End 14 Comics In March 2015

DC solicitations for March 2015 were released today, and it appears that the publisher is cleaning house leading up to their Convergence event in April and May. No fewer than 14 ongoing series are wrapping up in March, including New 52 mainstays like Batwoman, Swamp Thing, and several Green Lantern titles.

Check out the full list of cancellations below:
  • Aquaman and the Others #11
  • Arkham Manor #6
  • Batman Eternal #52
  • Batwoman #40
  • Green Lantern: New Guardians #40
  • Infinity Man and the Forever People #9
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us - Year Three #12
  • Klarion #6
  • Red Lanterns #40
  • Secret Origins #11
  • Star-Spangled War Stories Featuring G.I. Zombie #8
  • Swamp Thing #40
  • Trinity of Sin #6
  • World's Finest #32

While the solicitations for Earth 2: World's End and The New 52: Futures End don't make it explicit, we suspect both of those series are also concluding in March.

The motivations for ending these series vary from book to book. In the case of Injustice and Batman Eternal, both books are reaching the end of their pre-planned stories. It's probably safe to assume an Injustice: Year Four will follow shortly, and rumors suggest another weekly Batman comic is in the works as well. As for Red Lanterns and Swamp Thing, writer Charles Soule is wrapping up his tenure on both books as he shifts to becoming a Marvel-exclusive creator.

Some of these cancellations, though, are probably due to low sales. Star-Spangled War Stories is certainly not the first war-themed comic to struggle in the New 52. Books like Aquaman and the Others and Infinity Man and the Forever People have also been among the lower-selling DC titles. However, it's surprising to see recently launched series like Klarion and Trinity of Sin ending so soon. The cancellation that surprises us the most is Arkham Manor. Given the positive critical response to that series, we would have expected it to last longer than six issues. However, writer Gerry Duggan also recently signed an exclusive contract with Marvel, so that may have been a factor.

Time will tell what exactly DC has planned for these various characters and franchises. The solicit for Green Lantern #40 promises a major status quo change, and we expect that to lead into new ongoing series in June once Convergence ends.
